The work of Šejla Kamerić is both intimate and socially engaged, as Kamerić herself stares out at the viewer, with the oversized graffiti: “No teeth…? A mustache…? Smel like shit? Bosnian Girl!” .
Graffiti written by an unknown Dutch soldier on a wall of the army barracks in Potočari, Srebrenica, 1994/95.
Royal Netherlands Army troops, as part of the UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992 -95, were responsible for protecting the Srebrenica safe area.
She is the Bosnian girl standing in for all women in Bosnia, the disfiguration of a national identity.
